The scientific creation story
The biggest science project ever, the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) is well under way. For those who don’t know what LHC is, it is a particle collider built by CERN, it has been several decades under way, and has united tens of thousands of scientists from more than 85 countries. The aim: to try and discover some of the most elusive elementary particles. Particles that have been predicted by scientific theories, but never seen yet.
The LHC hasn’t been switched on yet; it is still being assembled. Initially they said they would be ready to do the preliminary test runs this summer, and we are now getting closer to autumn. So, while we are waiting for the first beams to travel around inside the superfluid helium cooled superconducting magnets, and the first collision data to appear on the LHC website, why not watch this video by Brian Cox. He gives us a rundown of what the LHC will do, and tells us The most beautiful creation storyi!
